In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a quarter of the population, or one in four people, is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Last year, malnutrition affected 6.4 million people, mostly children under the age of 5. This alarming figure has not decreased for two decades.
The country recorded the highest number of internal displacements on the African continent, with 5.7 million people forced to move within the country.
Serious but preventable epidemics such as measles, yellow fever, cholera and malaria continue to cause enormous losses due to fragile infrastructure, poor access to care and low vaccination coverage. The DRC is among the countries with the highest maternal and infant mortality rates.
